Homemade Nut Butter

Nut butters are all the rage nowadays. People are finding new nuts and seeds to turn into butter and spreads daily. The popular store bought nut butters actually aren’t that great for you. They're highly processed and contain a lot of unnecessary sugar and preservatives. Making your own nut butters at home is so much better for you, tastier, and is more cost effective. Making nut butter may sound like a difficult task, but in reality is quite simple. I think the best part of making nut butter at home is that you know exactly what is going into your nut butter and it tastes a million times better. In the recipe below, I’m going to teach you how to make homemade peanut butter and almond butter. This process also works for any other nut you would want to turn into a spread.

YEILD: 1 cup of nut butter

TOTAL TIME: 12 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups almonds, peanuts or any other nut

RECIPE:

  1. Before you start, you can pop the nuts onto a tray and roast them in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 350° F and stir them half way through to enhance the flavor, but I have also made nut butter without doing this step and it came out almost identical.

  2. Add nuts into a food processor and blend for 7-12 minutes or until it forms a paste. The oils from the nuts are released which then causes the ground up nuts to form a paste

  3. If you want your nut butter to be on the sweeter side, add a dash of maple syrup and/or vanilla.

  4. If you want your nut butter to be on the savory side, add a couple pinches of sea salt.

NOTES:

If you are using a Vitamix, make sure you do not half the recipe because there won't be enough nuts in the blender to blend.

This recipe makes creamy and smooth nut butter, to make crunchy nut butter, follow steps 1-4, and then add in a half cup of nuts at the end and pulse a couple times until you reach your desired consistency.
